ART CRITIQUE

Photorealism
Although the concept of Photorealism, as developed in America, never really found footing in this country, Austria can not, never the less, ignore a group of artists whose work follows this pattern. Heiner Frauendorfer, who for many years transformed his visual impressions in this manner, is a member of this group. The beholder is tempted to see these squeamishly painted pictures as a copy of a factual incident, that is however only a reason for his subjective creation of pictures. Big City landmarks - Sky Scrapers, historical monuments, billboards, courtyards, facades, roofs, fire-escapes, sculptures in open spaces, cornice architecture - but also architectural structures and nature in the country periphery, are the themes tackled by the Artist. Frauendorfer theorised the ÒSimultaneity of the non -simultaneousÓ as much as he fathomed out the formal possibilities that stemmed from an unconventional point of view. Often geometrical structures, particularly in the architecture of his city pictures, in combination with typeface from billboards or superscripts, formed the subjects of his pictures. His marked choice of motifs and his conscious association with light and shadow make his pictures stand out. They convey to the beholder a fascinating world on the border of illusiveness and reality, that appears detached from reality and fantasy.
